The Story

The client had purchased this vacation home in 1989. While the home had deep sentimental value, the high costs of operation combined with low rents over a 7 year period had prompted the client to consider selling. The decision was made to keep the home in the family and renovations began. Within a year increased rental rates had paid for the remodel and it just had it's highest grossing year to date.

Inspiration
With a sensitivity for retaining the client's nostalgia of the space (after housing 3 generations of skiers), we opted for simple, clean colors and lines, and infused the space with elements invoking carefree, whimsical times with loved ones. Most of the original artwork was left in place, including paintings that the client's fully grown children had made nearly 30 years ago. Details from the great outdoors were incorporated with subtle nods to nature and wildlife.

Journey
Though not uncommon, one of the biggest challenges of this project was the local HOA. Because of the sensitive nature of Alta being a watershed as well as an extremely small community, there were very stringent requirements around our work efforts. Workers were obliged to park at the base of the canyon and bus up, or get dropped off with their tools. These added restrictions made this project a challenge, but informed us how to work around obstacles in an efficient way.

Insights
Added restrictions and requirements made this project a challenge, yet they provided us with a platform to learn how to work around obstacles in an efficient way. Incorporating elements of a family’s history while conceiving a space that was contemporary and original led us to make refreshingly new design decisions that honor the past.
